Boat Trailers-A Necessity For Avid Fishermen

Most fishermen don't live close enough to a lake, ocean or river to guide their boat right into the water, so they must transport their vessel using a boat trailer. Managing boat trailers can be challenging. It all begins with the selection of the boat trailer.

When shopping boat trailers, use common sense. The boat trailer needs to be big enough to hold your boat. Many fishermen hope to save money by purchasing a smaller boat trailer, but this can be dangerous and the boat can remove itself from the trailer. This can cause a serious accident if the boat is being towed at the time.

You also need to make sure your vehicle can tow the boat, boat trailers and your fishing gear and other items. Check you vehicle's owners manual to see which boat trailers you vehicle can handle.

Boat trailers must have license plates. The cost of these vary from state to state so check with your local tag office. In addition, boat trailers must have brake and tail lights and turn signals. You can be cited by law enforcement if these lights are not properly working.

Many fishermen say the most exhausting part their trip is dealing with boat trailers. The owner's manual that came with your boat trailer is the first place you should look for instructions on how to hook your boat trailer to your vehicle.

You have to make sure boat trailers are tied down properly or they will come loose. You need two chains that will attach the trailer to the stern and one to attach it to the rear. Check the boat trailer’s tires and make sure they are inflated properly. Once you have hooked the boat trailer up, make sure the boat is balanced.

When towing boat trailers, stop frequently to check the trailer and the boat. Secure the tie-downs. Check the tire pressure on the boat trailer and the vehicle. And check the trailer's lights. You don't want to a ticket for improper equipment to spoil your fishing trip.

If you are not experienced at towing boat trailers, you may want to practice on some back roads before you hit the highway. Practice stopping, backing and turning with the boat trailer attached to your vehicle. Make sure the lights are working. Fill the vehicle up with gas before attaching the boat trailer. The U.S. Department of Transportation has a booklet entitled "Towing a Trailer" that offers tips and advice on using boat trailers.

Once you have made it to your fishing destination safely, you will join others as you remove your boats from you boat trailers. You must remove all tie-downs on boat trailers before you can launch your boat in the water. Disconnect the wires that provide electricity for your lights. Have someone help you launch the boat trailer so that the boat and your vehicle don't end up in the water!

Boat trailers range in price depending on the size of your boat. Most outdoor shops and several online stores have a wide selection of boat trailers.
